Dental Fillings

Cavities are, most often, caused due to the microbial activity in the mouth. When you do not brush your teeth properly or let food debris stay on them for a long time, the microbes in the mouth release acids and form a layer on the teeth, called plaque. When plaque isn’t removed regularly, it turns into a dark, hard, and sticky substance called tartar.

The bacteria in tartar have the ability to erode the enamel and reach the inner layers of the teeth. They decay the tissues of the teeth and make them vulnerable. When left untreated, the cavity can grow deeper and result in a root canal infection. This can put one’s entire oral health at risk.

How can cavities be treated?

The natural tissues of the teeth lost to cavities can’t be brought back. However, dental fillings can be applied to the cavities that would restore their shape, structure and prevent it from growing bigger. Depending on your expectations and the condition of your cavity, we would suggest the right type of filling to restore your teeth.

What are the different types of fillings?

  • Amalgam fillings: Amalgam fillings are made from a mixture of mercury and at least one other metal. They have a lustrous and metallic appearance and are quite apparent. However, they offer excellent sealing properties and prevent the microbes from causing reinfection.
  • Ceramic fillings: Tooth-colored ceramic fillings are widely preferred by dentists from all over the world to restore teeth infected by cavities. They are easy to work with, can be shaped as required, match the color of the teeth perfectly, and offer excellent sealing. Moreover, their durable nature allows them to last for several years without hassle.
  • Composite resinous fillings: Composite resin is a reliable material that can be used as a filling to treat cavities, cracks, chipping and to fill the occlusal grooves of the molars and premolars. They can be made to match the exact shade of the teeth, which is why they are pretty good at staying in disguise.

What are the advantages of getting fillings?

  • Applying a filling to a cavity prevents its growth. The infection can be halted successfully and the failure of the tooth can be prevented.
  • Tooth colored fillings can be customized to such as extent that they can’t be distinguished from the natural enamel. Their color can be made to perfectly mimic that of the adjoining teeth.
  • Fillings are long-lasting. They easily last for several years together if you take good care of them.
  • The rate of wear of the filling material is almost similar to that of the enamel. Hence, they wouldn’t need frequent adjustments to be made.
